Our kiln

The equipment which makes The New Black Biochar is located in Glen Huon, Tasmania. It’s a continuous flow pyrolysis chamber, heated initially by a sawdust combustion chamber. All the gases released in the heating of the feedstock material, and those from the combustion chamber, are fed back into the pyrolysis chamber. This ensures a clean, closed loop process with no smoke from partially combusted materials being emitted to the atmosphere.

The hot air exiting the chambers is passed through a heat exchange system, and a fan blowing across this system provides heat for drying and reconditioning timber.

  • The kiln has the capacity to divert and condense the pyrolysis gases, known as syngas, which can be used to power electric plant at Bodie’s sawmill operation.
